Saline rinse for lung infection treatment

This study tests whether rinsing the infected space around the lung with salt water (saline) before giving enzyme medicine helps clear the infection better than just the enzyme medicine alone. It's for people with a serious lung infection (empyema) that requires a chest tube.

Who can take part

  • You have signs of infection in the fluid around your lung (pus, low pH, low sugar, or bacteria).
  • You are starting enzyme treatment (intrapleural lytic therapy) to break up the infected fluid.
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or low platelets, and you can stop blood thinners safely.
  • You are not pregnant or nursing, or you are willing to have a pregnancy test.
  • You do not have a tunneled pleural catheter in the same side of your chest now or recently.
