Who can take part

  • You must be 18 or older and able to read and understand English at a 6th grade level or above.
  • If you have opioid use disorder (OUD), you must have used opioids (heroin or painkillers) for at least 12 months and be getting treatment (like buprenorphine or methadone) as an outpatient.
  • If you are a healthy volunteer, you cannot have used any illegal drugs (other than nicotine) or have a history of problematic alcohol use beyond college/military, and you cannot have taken certain brain medications in the last 6 weeks.
  • You cannot have certain metal in your body, severe claustrophobia, or be pregnant (because an MRI is involved).
  • You cannot have had a serious head injury with loss of consciousness over 30 minutes, seizures, or a history of intellectual disability or schizophrenia.
