Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and admitted to the ICU at Foothills Medical Centre.
  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) with a tube in your windpipe.
  • Your doctor expects you will need the breathing machine for more than 3 days.
  • You do not have pneumonia when starting the study.
  • You do not have severe chronic lung disease that requires home oxygen or a home breathing machine.
  • You are not allergic to the antibiotics used in the study (tobramycin, aztreonam, or vancomycin).
  • You have been on the breathing machine for less than 48 hours.
