Who can take part

  • You must have Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), a severe lung injury that makes it hard to breathe.
  • You must not have long-term lung diseases like emphysema or asthma, or a recent collapsed lung.
  • You must not be currently unstable (e.g., very low oxygen levels, shock needing strong drugs, serious heart problems, or uncontrolled brain pressure).
  • Your esophagus must be healthy enough for placing a small balloon tube (no varices, narrowing, recent surgery, or bleeding).
  • You must be able to have a CT scan (body weight under 170 kg and belly size under 200 cm).
