Who can take part

  • You are 21 years or older and in an intensive care unit (ICU).
  • You have a lung condition called ARDS, which means your lungs are injured and you need a breathing machine.
  • You have been on the breathing machine for less than 4 days (96 hours).
  • Your doctor expects you will need the breathing machine for at least 2 more days.
  • You are not pregnant, and you are not participating in another drug study.
  • You do not have severe chronic lung disease, recent heart attack or stroke, or major burns.
