Who can take part

  • You are 18 to 99 years old
  • You have been diagnosed with ARDS (a serious lung injury) and need a breathing tube
  • A lung exam (bronchoscopy) is planned within 24 hours of starting the breathing tube
  • You do not have heart failure, active cancer, stomach bleeding, or a weak immune system
  • You are not taking certain medications like steroids or NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) in the last day
