  • You are on a breathing machine (invasive mechanical ventilation) because of respiratory failure.
  • You are in the weaning phase, meaning doctors are trying to reduce your ventilator support.
  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You are not sedated or receiving neuromuscular blocking agents.
  • You do not have a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or active air leaks from the lungs.
  • You are medically stable (not in shock or with unstable blood pressure).
