Comparing ventilator pressure settings for moderate-to-severe lung injury

This study compares different ways of setting the positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP – the pressure that helps keep your lungs open on the ventilator) to find the best approach for people with moderate-to-severe ARDS. Who can take part

  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) in the ICU.
  • You have moderate-to-severe lung injury (ARDS) with low blood oxygen levels despite oxygen support.
  • You already have a pressure-measuring tube in your esophagus and a chest belt to track breathing.
  • You do not have a pacemaker or implantable defibrillator.
  • You are not in a prone (face-down) position, not on ECMO, and do not have a collapsed lung or active chest tube drainage.
  • Your blood pressure is stable, without major recent increases in norepinephrine medication dose.
