Brain stimulation for treatment-resistant depression with rumination

This study tests whether a specific form of brain stimulation (called rTMS) can help people with treatment-resistant depression by targeting brain circuits linked to rumination (repetitive negative thinking). If you have tried at least one antidepressant without success and do not have other major mental health conditions, this trial may be worth exploring with your doctor.

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with major depression (unipolar type, without psychosis) by a doctor.
  • Your first depressive episode happened before you were 50 years old.
  • Your depression is currently at least moderate (a Hamilton Depression score of 17 or higher).
  • You have tried and failed at least one antidepressant (adequate dose and duration) for your current episode.
  • You are either off psychiatric medications or on a stable dose for six weeks and willing to stay on that dose during the study.
  • You have not had TMS before, and you are not at high risk for seizures or have a history of epilepsy.
