Ketamine to protect the brain during heart surgery in children

This study tests whether giving ketamine during heart surgery helps protect the brain in young children. It is for children aged 1 month to 5 years who are having surgery to fix a hole in the wall between the heart chambers (atrial or ventricular septal defect).

Who can take part

  • Your child is between 1 month and 5 years old (1 to 60 months).
  • Your child weighs between 7.7 pounds and 44 pounds (3.5 to 20 kg).
  • Your child is scheduled for surgery to repair a hole in the heart (atrial or ventricular septal defect) using a heart-lung machine.
  • Your child does not have any other heart defects besides this one hole, or a combination of both types.
  • Your child has no history of brain or nervous system diseases, stroke, or seizures.
  • Your child does not have a pacemaker, severe anemia, active infections, autoimmune diseases, or cancer.
