New gum surgery for deep pockets with bone loss

This study tests a new way of repairing deep gum pockets around teeth that have lost bone on one or two sides. It compares the simplified papilla preservation flap technique with or without a small piece of connective tissue, both using a special enamel protein gel to help regrow bone and gum attachment.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 55 years old and willing to join the study.
  • You have a type of gum disease called a 'non-contained infrabony defect' – a deep pocket around a tooth that has caused bone loss on one or two sides.
  • This pocket is at least 6mm deep when measured with a probe, and the bone loss on an X-ray is at least 3mm deep with a certain angle.
  • Your overall mouth health is good – less than 20% of your teeth have plaque or bleeding when checked.
  • You have not had gum surgery on that specific tooth before.
  • You do not smoke, are not pregnant or breastfeeding, have no serious medical conditions, and are not allergic to the enamel matrix protein used in the treatment.
