Who can take part
- You are 18 or older and in the intensive care unit (ICU).
- You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 48 hours.
- Your doctor suspects you have a lung infection from the ventilator (called VAP).
- You will need a procedure to collect fluid from your lungs (bronchoalveolar lavage).
- You are not pregnant.
- You have not had a VAP infection earlier in this same hospital stay.
