Who can take part

  • Your child must be in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
  • Your child must have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 48 hours.
  • Your child cannot be expected to pass away soon or be on a comfort-only care plan.
  • Your child cannot have a tracheostomy (breathing tube through the neck) already in place.
  • Your child cannot have a weakened immune system or be on medicines that weaken the immune system.
  • Your child cannot have had a full course of antibiotics in the past 6 weeks.
  • Your child cannot have known or suspected tuberculosis (TB).
