Who can take part

  • You are at least 19 years old and your bones have finished growing.
  • Your surgery is for a bunion (hallux valgus) and only involves the first joint of the big toe, possibly with a few small extra procedures.
  • You do not have severe arthritis, osteoporosis, nerve problems, active infection, or Charcot foot in that foot.
  • You are not having other major foot fusions or ankle surgery at the same time.
  • You are not at high risk for poor healing—for example, no poorly controlled diabetes, current smoking, or BMI over 50.
