Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old and in the ICU.
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 3 full days (72 hours).
  • You are ready to start a mode that helps you breathe more on your own, but not yet ready to come off the ventilator completely.
  • You have not already tried breathing on your own successfully in the last 24 hours.
  • You do not have serious heart problems, unstable blood pressure, or certain other medical conditions (like severe anemia, pregnancy, or major brain injury).
