Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older.
- You are currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) and have been on a breathing machine for less than 24 hours.
- Your lung failure is severe, as shown by a specific blood gas measurement (oxygen level in the blood is between 13.3-26.6 kPa).
- A chest x-ray or CT scan taken within the last day shows new fluid or inflammation in your lungs.
- You do not have conditions like severe burns, recent heart attack, chronic breathing failure needing home oxygen, or serious brain injury.
