New scar-free thyroid surgery vs. standard surgery for thyroid cancer

Who can take part

  • Your thyroid tumor must be smaller than 3 centimeters (about 1.2 inches).
  • You must have a type of thyroid cancer called papillary thyroid carcinoma (the most common kind).
  • The cancer must not have spread outside the thyroid gland (no extension beyond the thyroid).
  • You must not have any enlarged lymph nodes in the side of the neck (as felt by a doctor or seen on ultrasound).
  • There must be no sign that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body (like the lungs or bones).
  • You must not have had radiation therapy to the neck or any neck surgery in the past.
