Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are having laparoscopic or open colorectal surgery, or another major abdominal surgery at UPMC Shadyside
  • You develop a temporary bowel slowdown (ileus) after surgery
  • Your doctor expects you will need a nasogastric tube placed
  • You are not pregnant, can read and speak English, and have no cognitive issues that would prevent you from giving consent
