This study tests whether a small device that gently stimulates a nerve in your neck can help you recover better after lumbar spine surgery. The device may help reduce confusion, depression, and other thinking problems that sometimes occur after surgery.

Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older and scheduled for lumbar (lower back) spine surgery for degenerative disc disease or spinal stenosis involving two or more levels
- You have mild or normal thinking and memory abilities (MoCA score of 18 or higher)
- You can use a keyboard and communicate clearly in English
- You do not have a history of heart rhythm problems, seizures, or major neurological conditions
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and not currently in another research study testing brain or behavior
- You have not had your vagus nerve (a major nerve in your neck) surgically cut, and do not have carotid artery narrowing or brain aneurysms
