Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and scheduled for lumbar (lower back) spine surgery for degenerative disc disease or spinal stenosis involving two or more levels
  • You have mild or normal thinking and memory abilities (MoCA score of 18 or higher)
  • You can use a keyboard and communicate clearly in English
  • You do not have a history of heart rhythm problems, seizures, or major neurological conditions
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and not currently in another research study testing brain or behavior
  • You have not had your vagus nerve (a major nerve in your neck) surgically cut, and do not have carotid artery narrowing or brain aneurysms
