This study tests whether using an endoscopic ultrasound to measure the pressure inside blood vessels in the liver can help doctors choose the best treatment for people with advanced liver disease. You may be eligible if you are planning to start a medicine (non-selective beta-blocker) to prevent a first bleed from varices.

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with advanced liver disease (such as cirrhosis).
  • Your doctor has recommended that you take a medicine called a non-selective beta-blocker (NSBB) to prevent a first bleed from varices (enlarged veins in the esophagus).
  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You do not have advanced liver cancer that cannot be treated with a cure.
  • You are not pregnant, and you do not have a narrowing in your esophagus that would make the endoscopy difficult.
  • Your blood tests show adequate clotting (INR 1.5 or lower) and enough platelets (50,000 or more), and you do not have ascites (fluid in the belly).

EUS-guided tool to check how well beta-blockers work for cirrhosis
