Comparing two bleeding-control patches during open surgery

This study tests a special patch called TachoSil against a standard surgical pad (Surgicel) to see which works better for controlling minor oozing during open abdominal, chest, or pelvic surgeries. It may be an option if you are having certain types of surgery and have a small area of mild bleeding that needs help to stop.

Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for an open surgery (not keyhole or robotic) on your belly, pelvic area, chest, or a transplant (except liver or heart).
  • During surgery, you will have a small area (smaller than about 1.6 inches across) of mild-to-moderate oozing that needs extra help to stop bleeding.
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder (like hemophilia) and you can safely stop taking blood thinners before surgery.
  • Your hemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein in blood) is above 9, your platelet count is above 75,000, and your INR (a clotting measure) is 1.5 or lower.
  • The bleeding spot is not near bone, in an infected area, or from a large artery or vein that needs stitches.
