Comparing Two Noninvasive Ventilation Types for COPD Flare-ups

Who can take part

  • You have a confirmed flare-up of COPD (AECOPD).
  • Your blood carbon dioxide level is high (PaCO2 > 45 mmHg) and blood pH is low (< 7.35).
  • After trying low-intensity breathing support for 6 hours, your carbon dioxide stays high.
  • You do not have serious breathing muscle weakness, recent facial or stomach surgery, or other major lung or heart conditions.
  • You are willing to try noninvasive ventilation and have not been intubated during this hospital stay.
