Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older
  • You are having a sudden worsening of COPD (called an exacerbation) and are in the emergency room
  • You are breathing fast (at least 25 breaths per minute) or using extra muscles to breathe
  • A blood test shows high carbon dioxide (greater than 45) and acidic blood (pH less than 7.35)
  • You have not already started breathing support with a mask for this episode (unless you use it at home)
  • You are able to understand and agree to take part in the study
