Modified physical therapy for arm and hand recovery after stroke

This study tests a type of physical therapy called modified constraint-induced movement therapy to help improve arm and hand function in people who have had a stroke more than six months ago. You will be encouraged to use your affected arm more often while the stronger arm is gently restricted, which may help retrain your brain and improve movement.

Who can take part

  • You had a stroke more than 6 months ago and have weakness on one side of your body.
  • You are between 45 and 65 years old.
  • You can move your wrist upward (extend) at least 20 degrees and your knuckles at least 10 degrees on your affected side.
  • Your arm muscles have at least some strength (grade 2 or more), especially the muscles that lift your wrist.
  • You have no major thinking or memory problems (score above 24 on a standard mental test).
  • You do not have other neurological conditions or severe vision or language problems.
