Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have been diagnosed with a high-grade myeloid neoplasm (with 10% or more blasts), acute myeloid leukemia (not APL), or B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma.
  • You are planning to receive intensive chemotherapy or a stem cell transplant that is expected to cause low red blood cell counts and low platelet counts (under 30,000 for at least 5 days).
  • You will receive all of your post-chemo or post-transplant care at the University of Washington or Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
  • You do not need a platelet transfusion unless your count falls below 10,000, and you are not on blood thinners or anti-clotting medications that cannot be paused when platelets drop below 50,000.
  • You do not have significant bleeding, have not had a blood clot or heart attack in the last 6 months, and are not on dialysis.
