This study collects small tissue samples during planned weight-loss surgery to better understand metabolism and how insulin works in people with and without type 2 diabetes. You may help researchers by allowing their team to take these samples while you are already having surgery.

Who can take part

  • You can sign an informed consent form
  • You are age 18 to 65 at the time of surgery
  • You have a BMI over 35 and are eligible for bariatric surgery (sleeve or bypass)
  • You fit one of these groups: type 2 diabetes, or insulin resistance (based on blood tests), or insulin sensitivity (based on blood tests)
  • You have not had bariatric surgery before (except lap-band), and your surgery is not canceled
  • You can take part in tissue collection during your surgery and you can follow study steps
