  • Be between 18 and 75 years old
  • Have either type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome
  • Not have advanced kidney disease (stage 4 or worse)
  • Not have an autoimmune or chronic inflammatory disease (like lupus or ulcerative colitis)
  • Have no recent serious heart problems in the last 3 months
  • Not be pregnant or breast-feeding
