Comparing two sedatives to prevent delirium after heart surgery

This trial tests whether a newer sedative (remimazolam) or a commonly used one (dexmedetomidine) is better at preventing delirium after planned heart surgery that requires a heart-lung machine. If you are having elective coronary bypass or valve surgery, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are scheduled for elective heart surgery (bypass surgery or valve replacement).
  • You do not have allergies to the study drugs (remimazolam or dexmedetomidine).
  • You have no history of schizophrenia, epilepsy, severe dementia, or other serious brain conditions.
  • You can communicate normally (no severe vision/hearing problems or language barriers).
  • Your surgery is expected to last at least 2 hours on the heart-lung machine with at least 90 minutes of the aorta clamped.
