- You are 18 years or older.
- You are scheduled for a major elective (planned, not emergency) surgery, such as heart, chest, or abdominal surgery.
- Doctors expect you to need to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) for more than one day after your surgery.
- You do not have a pre-existing neuromuscular disease (a disease affecting your nerves and muscles).
