Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are scheduled for a major elective (planned, not emergency) surgery, such as heart, chest, or abdominal surgery.
  • Doctors expect you to need to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) for more than one day after your surgery.
  • You do not have a pre-existing neuromuscular disease (a disease affecting your nerves and muscles).
  • You do not have a pre-existing central nervous system condition that leaves lasting muscle or nerve problems (like a prior stroke, brain bleed, or brain tumor).
  • You are not taking high doses of steroids (like more than 300 mg hydrocortisone or equivalent per day) before or during the study.
