Who can take part

  • Be critically ill and on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation)
  • Join within 72 hours of ICU admission, and expect to stay in ICU at least 7 days
  • Have a sudden cause of illness (for example trauma, stroke, or sudden cardiac arrest)
  • Be able to sign consent (or have a legally authorized representative sign)
  • Plan for muscle biopsy/testing is possible because bleeding risk must be low
