- Children aged 6 months to 5 years with a fever that started less than 7 days ago (child must be well enough to give a small blood sample)

- Pregnant women having a single baby, planning to stay in the study area after birth, and expecting a normal delivery without needing C-section
- Newborns born full-term whose family lives in the study area
