Laser plus balloon vs. balloon alone for leg artery blockages

This study compares using a laser device (Auryon) plus balloon angioplasty versus balloon angioplasty alone to open blocked arteries in the lower leg. The goal is to improve blood flow and reduce pain or heal sores in people with advanced peripheral artery disease.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and expected to live at least another year.
  • You have pain in your leg even at rest, or have sores or gangrene on your foot or toes (Rutherford category 4 or 5).
  • The blockage is a single, new narrowing in a lower leg artery below the knee, between 5 and 30 cm long, and the artery beyond it is clear.
  • You are able to have angiography (X-ray of your arteries) and the procedure done through a catheter.
  • You have not had a heart attack or stroke in the last 60 days, and do not have advanced kidney disease (on dialysis or creatinine >2.5).
