This trial compares two nerve-monitoring techniques used during a scarless thyroid surgery performed through the mouth (called TOETVA). It is for people with benign thyroid nodules or early-stage thyroid cancer that has not spread to lymph nodes.

Who can take part
- You have a benign thyroid nodule, a follicular lesion, or an early papillary thyroid cancer smaller than 1 cm.
- Your largest thyroid nodule is smaller than 6 cm (about the size of a lime).
- If you have cancer, it has not spread to the lymph nodes in your neck.
- You have never had thyroid surgery or radiation to your neck.
- You do not have a paralyzed vocal cord.
- Your surgery is completed through the mouth (no cut on the neck) and does not need to be changed to a traditional open surgery.
