Who can take part

  • You need to be having thyroid surgery (either full removal or half removal)
  • You must be 19 years old or older
  • You cannot have had previous thyroid or parathyroid surgery
  • You cannot have preoperative vocal cord paralysis (difficulty moving your vocal cords before surgery)
  • You cannot have cancer that has spread to lymph nodes in your neck
  • The surgical team must be able to use special monitoring equipment (IONM) to check nerve function during surgery
