This study compares two pain medicines, morphine and ketamine, given through an IV, to see which works better for severe pain from a broken arm or leg bone or belly pain. If you have severe pain and your doctor decides you need morphine, you may be eligible to join.

Who can take part

  • You have belly pain or a broken arm or leg bone (or it is suspected).
  • You rate your pain as 6 or higher on a 0 to 10 scale.
  • Your ER doctor decides you need morphine for pain.
  • You weigh 82.4 kg (about 182 pounds) or less.
  • You do not have a known allergy to morphine or ketamine.
  • You have not already received ketamine for this problem.
  • You do not have a long-term pain condition that requires regular opioid use at home.
  • You are not critically ill, intoxicated, or have a serious health condition that might interfere.
  • You are not pregnant.
  • You speak English or Spanish.
