Who can take part

  • You have pain, clicking, or shifting of your jaw when opening your mouth.
  • You have tried other treatments (like a mouthguard or exercises) and they didn't help enough.
  • Your jaw problem is due to a slipped disc that goes back into place (not a stuck disc).
  • You do not have arthritis, major bone changes, or an infection in the jaw joint.
  • You have not had jaw surgery or joint injections before.
  • You are not allergic to any of the ingredients in the study injections.

Comparing treatments for jaw joint disc displacement

This trial compares two treatments for a jaw joint problem where the disc is out of place. One treatment is a procedure called arthroscopic surgery (ARS), the other is ARS with a joint washout and injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to help healing. This study compares two guided injection techniques—ultrasound and arthroscopy—to deliver platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a regenerative treatment, into the temporomandibular joint (the jaw joint). PRF may help reduce pain and improve jaw function in patients with disc displacement who haven't improved with conservative care like splints or physical therapy.

Sugar water injection vs. jaw washing for jaw clicking and pain

This trial tests whether a simple injection of sugar water (dextrose 5%) into the jaw joint helps more than a standard jaw-washing procedure (arthrocentesis) for people whose jaw disc slips out of place (anterior disc displacement) and who haven't improved with physical therapy.
