Sugar injections for jaw joint pain: comparing two doses

TMJ Disc Disorder

This clinical trial tests whether injecting a sugar solution (dextrose) into the jaw joint can reduce pain and improve function. It compares a 25% concentration to a 10% concentration in people whose jaw disc moves out of place but goes back in (with a click). You will not know which dose you receive.

Who can take part

  • You have jaw joint pain or discomfort, especially when opening or closing your mouth.
  • You hear or feel a clicking sound in your jaw joint.
  • You have some trouble opening your mouth fully or feel limited movement.
  • You are at least 18 years old and can attend follow-up visits.
  • You do not have a fixed jaw (locked completely open or closed) and have not had surgery on that joint.

Sugar water injection vs. jaw washing for jaw clicking and pain

This trial tests whether a simple injection of sugar water (dextrose 5%) into the jaw joint helps more than a standard jaw-washing procedure (arthrocentesis) for people whose jaw disc slips out of place (anterior disc displacement) and who haven't improved with physical therapy.
