Fat or platelet injection for jaw disc pain

This study compares a new treatment using your own fat cells (Lipogems) with a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to see which better helps jaw pain and clicking caused by a slipped disc. Both treatments are injected into the jaw joint and aim to improve how wide you can open your mouth.

Who can take part

  • You have jaw pain, clicking, or trouble opening your mouth wide
  • An MRI shows the disc in your jaw joint is out of place
  • You do not have a blood disorder, nerve condition, or past head/neck cancer
  • You do not have a connective tissue disorder and can safely have fat taken from your body

This trial tests whether a simple injection of sugar water (dextrose 5%) into the jaw joint helps more than a standard jaw-washing procedure (arthrocentesis) for people whose jaw disc slips out of place (anterior disc displacement) and who haven't improved with physical therapy.

This clinical trial tests whether injecting a sugar solution (dextrose) into the jaw joint can reduce pain and improve function. It compares a 25% concentration to a 10% concentration in people whose jaw disc moves out of place but goes back in (with a click). You will not know which dose you receive.

This trial tests a minimally invasive jaw surgery (arthroscopy) to treat a specific jaw disc problem that hasn't improved with conservative treatments like physical therapy or mouth guards. Half of patients will also receive a hyaluronic acid injection, which may reduce inflammation and improve jaw function.

This study tests a mixture of hyaluronic acid (a natural lubricant) and platelet-rich fibrin (from your own blood) injected into the jaw joint to see if it helps people with a misaligned jaw disc and pain. It may improve jaw movement and reduce discomfort.
