Ultrasound vs speech therapist for NG tube removal decision

This study is testing whether a simple ultrasound of the neck (called submental ultrasound) can help doctors decide when it's safe to remove a nasogastric (NG) tube, compared to a speech therapist's evaluation. If you have an NG tube that was placed due to a recent illness and are now recovering, this trial may help find a more reliable way to know when you can safely eat by mouth again.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older
  • You currently have a nasogastric (NG) tube in place
  • Your NG tube was placed because of a recent acute illness (like a temporary loss of consciousness, need for extra oxygen, or general weakness that made swallowing risky)
  • You are alert and can follow commands (not in a coma or confused)
  • You do not need a high-oxygen mask or a breathing machine (ventilator)
  • You have not had surgery or radiation on your head or neck
