This study compares two sedative medicines, dexmedetomidine and midazolam, to see which one helps preterm babies on a ventilator breathe on their own sooner. Your baby may be eligible if they were born very early and need medicine to relax while on the breathing machine.

Who can take part

  • Your baby was born before 32 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Your baby is currently younger than 45 weeks corrected age (counting from conception).
  • Your baby needs medicine to relax while on a breathing tube (ventilator) in the NICU.
  • Your baby has not received dexmedetomidine or midazolam in the last 48 hours (except for the procedure to insert the breathing tube).
  • Your baby has a working IV line or a plan to place one.
  • Both parents must sign a consent form.
