Long-term follow-up of ACL tear patients without surgery

LETACL ReconstructionOsteoarthritis (OA) of the Knee

This trial is for people with a torn ACL who are young (up to 25) and have certain risk factors for knee instability. It will follow them long-term to see how their knee does without surgery, focusing on those who are active in pivoting sports, have a loose knee joint, or have naturally loose joints.

Who can take part

  • You have a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in one knee
  • You are between skeletal maturity (usually around 14 for girls, 16 for boys) and 25 years old
  • You have at least two of the following: play a pivoting sport, have a knee that gives way (pivot shift), or have loose joints (Beighton score 4 or more)
  • You have not had ACL surgery on either knee before
  • You do not have a knee injury involving two or more ligaments that need surgery
  • You do not have a large cartilage defect that needs special treatment, and your leg is not more than 3 degrees knock-kneed
