  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have been diagnosed with acute low-oxygen respiratory failure in the last 48 hours
  • Your doctor expects you to need a breathing machine for at least 48 hours
  • You are already on a breathing machine and within 24 hours of starting it
  • You are deeply sedated and receiving medications to temporarily paralyze muscles
