Who can take part
- You are 18 or older
- Your tumor is a type of rectal cancer called adenocarcinoma and is at an early stage (still in the first layer, not spread to lymph nodes or other organs)
- The bottom edge of your tumor is no more than 2 inches (about 8 cm) from the anal opening
- You are healthy enough for daily activities (ECOG score of 0 or 1)
- You strongly want to avoid surgery that removes the anus, and your surgeon says it's safe to remove just the tumor
- You are willing to have chemotherapy and radiation after the surgery
