  • You must be 18 or older.
  • You must be in a hospital unit for intermediate respiratory care with acute respiratory failure for at least 8 hours.
  • You must not have unstable blood pressure or heart rhythm.
  • You must not have severe anemia, acidosis, or alkalosis (blood too acidic or too basic).
  • You must not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You must be willing to give written permission (informed consent).
