- You are 70 years old or older.
- You have a fracture in the odontoid (the peg-like part of one of the neck bones) that is unstable and happened within the last two weeks.
- You have not had any prior treatment for this same fracture.
- You do not have other serious neck fractures that need surgery.
- You are generally healthy enough to have surgery if needed (no severe health problems that would make surgery unsafe).
- You are not having numbness or weakness in your arms or legs caused by the fracture.
