Who can take part

  • Your baby is in the NICU or well-baby nursery and is at least 38 weeks corrected age (for low-tone group) or born between 38-41 weeks (for typical group).
  • If your baby has low muscle tone: abnormal brain scan or a low Apgar score or low cord pH plus 2 or more warning signs on a tone exam.
  • If your baby has typical muscle tone: a normal tone exam and a birth weight that’s appropriate for their gestational age.
  • Your baby does not have missing limbs, open skin sores, known genetic syndrome, or need sedating medications.
  • You (the guardian) understand and agree to the study and sign a consent form.
  • If your baby is in the hospital, their doctor must clear them for the study.
