If you qualify, you would receive a numbing block to the muscles near your spine before surgery to help manage pain afterward.

Who can take part
- You are between 25 and 80 years old
- You are scheduled for planned (not emergency) coronary bypass surgery without a heart-lung machine (off-pump)
- You have a heart pump strength (ejection fraction) of 40% or greater
- You do not have an infection where the block needle would go (upper back area near the shoulder blades)
- You are not on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder that would make a nerve block unsafe
- You have not had an allergic reaction to the medicines ropivacaine or dexmedetomidine
