Who can take part

  • You are between 20 and 65 years old.
  • You are scheduled for elective (non-emergency) heart bypass (CABG) or valve surgery, without any other heart or blood vessel procedures.
  • Your heart's pumping strength (ejection fraction) is above 35%.
  • You do not have kidney failure (creatinine level over 1.5) or liver failure.
  • You have not had a heart attack in the last 7 days, and you do not need a balloon pump to help your heart.
  • You have no infection at the block site, no allergy to local anesthetics, no psychiatric illness, and you are expected to be weaned from the ventilator soon after surgery.
