Who can take part
- You are 65 years old or older.
- You are scheduled for a planned (not emergency) major abdominal surgery, such as for the colon, liver, gallbladder, gynecologic, or urinary system.
- You can attend a standard pre-surgery checkup visit.
- You are willing to do short tests of muscle strength, walking, breathing, memory, and nutrition.
- You can walk on your own (not using a wheelchair or bedridden).
- You do not have severe memory or thinking problems that would make the tests hard to complete.
