Who can take part
- You are 65 or older and are scheduled for hip replacement due to a broken upper thigh bone or severe hip arthritis.
- You must not have a pacemaker or other metal implants that would make an MRI unsafe.
- You cannot have a lower-leg replacement on the opposite hip that would affect muscle measurements.
- You must not have cancer that is spreading or severe memory/thinking problems that would affect participation.
- You must be able to walk (with or without a cane or walker) before your hip fracture or surgery.
- If you have arthritis requiring surgery, you cannot have active inflammatory joint diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis).
